The US leads the world in numbers of Windows PCs that are part of botnets, reveals a report.
More than 2.2 million US PCs were found to be part of botnets, networks of hijacked home computers, in the first six months of 2010, it said. Compiled by Microsoft, the research revealed that Brazil had the second highest level of infections at 550,000. Microsoft's research revealed that a botnet called Lethic sent out 56% of all botnet spam sent between March and June even though it was only on 8.3% of all known botnet IP addresses. "It's phenomenal the amount of grip that thing has," said Mr Evans. Evidence of how botnets were growing, he said, could be found in the number of infected machines Microsoft was freeing from the clutches of botnets. In the three months between April and June 2010, Microsoft cleaned up more than 6.5 million infections, he said, which is twice as much as the same period in 2009. He said people should sign up for automatic updates, make sure the applications they use are regularly patched, use anti-virus software and run a firewall. Microsoft has just issued its largest ever list of fixes for flaws in Windows, Internet Explorer and a range of other software.

Fiber to the Home in the EUP Update:
The ARRA Stimulus funding has ended and unfortunately, the Chippewa County Grant application for the EUP was not funded. Apparently, we are not rural or underserved in the eyes of those who chose where the money was spent. The one bright spot was the cooperation between Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac Counties and Lighthouse to put this grant together. It was a great step towards recognizing how dire the need is to bring improved services for the entire area. Lighthouse will continue to pursue opportunities and expand our network as funds allow. Thank you to everyone who supported this effort and those who support Lighthouse so that we can continue to work for improved services. If you have an area that needs fast internet, let us know and we will do our best to work with you!

Who Else Is Watching You Shop Online?
You might not mind if your kids try and see what you're doing as you Christmas shop online, but you may not want to share your shopping and surfing history with every big online ad company.
Current browsers offer tools to send out a strong instruction: Do Not Track Me! But ad companies don't have to respect your wishes.
Ad companies argue that tracking helps them serve you better. That’s fine – if it is your decision. As millions of Americans get ready to do their holiday shopping online, we want to send a loud and clear message from those who want to be respected when they say NO to online tracking.
Congress has the power to make the online ad companies listen to you – tell your elected officials to act now to protect your family's online activities.
Write or email your congress representatives and tell them "Do Not Track Me! Stop Online Tracking!!!"
